Sea captains, especially, keep their eye on the barometer to navigate their ships
away from approaching storms.
If the barometer needle falls to between 28 and 29 inches that means a nor'easter
or maybe even a hurricane is approaching.
There's a salty saying- "When the needle falls low, strong winds will blow".
You don't need to be a ship's captain to use a barometer. They are easy and fun to use.
Just turn the center knob so that the brass needle is over the black barometer needle.
Come back in an hour or two and see whether the barometer needle is rising or falling and
test your forecasting skills against the Weather Channel.
